Malaysia is known to have a great diversity of tropical fruit tree species representing a wide range of neglected and underutilised crops. More than 300 fruit tree species are recorded in the country, of which 16 major fruit species are classified as commercial fruits of economic importance, while the others are underutilised. These fruits possess a large amount of genetic diversity, providing the local communities fruits and products, nutrition, medicines, healthcare as well as enhancing household incomes. However, most of these species have not been fully exploited or being prioritised in research and development (R&D). They are also under threat due to land development and land conversion which then leads to potential loss of the genetic resources.
